Indonesia builds 36.000 Km Optical Fiber

Government of Indonesia plans to build optical fiber network along the length of 36.000 km, which connects around 440 city and sub-province in all Indonesia. "Project of Ring Palapa, expected start in 2007 and scheduled completed in range of three years," said Kemal A Stamboel, Member of Information Technology and National Communication Council (Detiknas).

Kemal Stamboel doesn't itemize total budget for the big project. But, the project finance will be fully given to investor or third party. For early step in 2007, the network has been build up in 18.000 villages in all Indonesia. To next three years, totally around 43.000 villages that is connected to network.

"Of course a lot people doubts this project can completed on time. But we are still optimistic," he said. This network development project is one of government effort to quicken information technology access and communications to all regions, including villages region.

Detiknas led directly by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Economy Coordination Minister Boediono as the deputy with support of expert member and IT practition. Detiknas is the institute which formed to arrange, observes, and helps IT industry development in Indonesia.

A number of plans are being prepared by government through Detiknas. Among others is legalization of software, applying of national mains number, e-budgeting, e-procurement, and Palapa Ring project.
